Participation in online learning opportunities is on the rise, and it is not difficult to understand why. With no geographic barriers, students have access to a broader spectrum of course material that can be accessed from anywhere at any time. Using the Internet to attend class, research information, and communicate with other students, teaches skills that will be critical to workers in the 21st century who will work and interact globally. Beyond equipping students with skills necessary for their success, online learning empowers students to become the primary agents in their learning process infusing them with the confidence to pursue their course of study and interests. |

Research studies of summer learning programs highlight many benefits including positive effects on student achievement. The effects of summer learning programs endure for at least two years after the student has engaged in the summer program. Not all summer learning programs result in positive outcomes for enrollees. Programming needs to be high-quality, and students need to enroll and attend regularly. Research points to several practices that are associated with program quality, including individualized instruction, parental involvement, and small class sizes. This summer we are offering select online courses that are interactive, engaging, and provide an academically meaningful online summer learning experience.
How does the ASB Online Academy's summer program work?
The Online Summer School was created to enhance student learning beyond the traditional semester start and end dates. Students can enroll in classes through the ASB Online Academy website and can select learning content through our various content providers. Since classes are provided online, they can be accessed anywhere there's an internet connection - allowing learning to continue throughout the summer months regardless of the student's location. Courses have been hand-picked by the Online Academy staff because of their content, structure, and expert online teachers.
What grades do you serve?
We currently have courses offered for students in grade levels 6-12.
What courses are available?
Our selection of courses is designed to enrich existing skill sets. A complete list of courses can be found here.
What's the summer school schedule?
Summer courses run from four to six weeks. Some courses have two different start and end dates - allowing students to choose a schedule that works for them. The specific dates can be found under each courses' description here.
How much study time per day should I allow for High School courses?
Most of our HS summer school courses require approximately 4-5 hours of work per day, 5 days per week for its duration.
Are students required to remain on campus to take their summer school courses?
No, students can access course content from anywhere there's an internet connection.
Are the high school classes worth any credit?
All content providers offer a "Summer Enrichment Course" certificate upon successful completion. These will not translate into school credits at ASB. Other schools may choose to translate these into credits for their school.
When will the students receive books for the courses?
Since these courses are all online, students don't have any physical reading materials. However, some courses require miscellaneous materials such as a calculator, compass, and general art supplies. If any external materials are required they will be found under the section titled "You will need the following:" under the course description.
Who teaches these online courses?
The content providers have only certified teachers teaching these courses. The teachers are qualified in the subject area(s) that they are teaching and are experienced in teaching in a virtual school environment.
How much interaction do the students have with the teachers?
Each course has an assigned teacher that will be with the student throughout the length of the course. Teachers are available by phone, email, and in many cases real-time LiveLesson® sessions.
What if a student does not complete the work by the end of the session? Will he/she be given an extension?
Due to the limited amount of time in summer sessions, extensions are not recommended. In extreme situations students need to contact their teacher if they are unable to complete course requirements.
What technologies are required by students in order to participate in the courses?
What computer skills do students need?
Students do not need advanced computer skills to complete the courses. We make it easy to become completely familiar with the learning management system by providing orientation courses.
